You're Never Going Where You Think: How Giant Platforms Engineer Your Every Click

You click a product link on Amazon. The page loads almost instantly. You feel like you went somewhere. But here's the thing — you probably didn't go directly anywhere. You passed through a series of invisible checkpoints, URL rewrites, and tracking layers so seamlessly engineered that you'd never know they existed unless you stopped to look at your browser's address bar. And even then, it's easy to miss.

This is the hidden architecture of the modern web. The biggest platforms in the world have spent billions of dollars perfecting what you might call the invisible redirect — a system of technical and psychological mechanisms that quietly funnel users toward their intended destinations while maintaining the illusion of a frictionless, natural experience.

So what's actually happening? And more importantly, what can smaller sites and indie developers learn from it?

The Mechanics Behind the Magic

At its most basic level, a redirect is just a server telling your browser: "Hey, that URL you asked for? Go here instead." A 301 redirect is permanent. A 302 is temporary. Most users never think about either. But platforms like Google, Meta, and Amazon have evolved way beyond simple redirects.

Google, for example, doesn't send you directly to a website when you click a search result. It routes your click through its own servers first — capturing data on what you clicked, when, and from which query — before landing you at the destination. The whole thing happens in milliseconds. You feel nothing. But Google logs everything.

Meta does something similar with external links shared on Facebook and Instagram. Click a link in a post, and you're often passing through a l.facebook.com or lnkd.in-style gateway. These aren't just tracking tools — they're control points. Platforms can use them to display interstitial warnings, throttle traffic to competitors, or quietly redirect users to in-app browsers instead of their default one. That last part is a big deal. When Instagram opens a link in its built-in browser rather than Chrome or Safari, it maintains a layer of control over your entire browsing session.

Amazon's URL structure is a masterclass in intentional obfuscation. Those sprawling product URLs with dozens of parameters? Most of them are tracking tags — ref=, tag=, linkCode= — that tell Amazon exactly where you came from, what you clicked, and which affiliate (if any) should get credit. Strip all that out, and you're left with a surprisingly simple URL. But Amazon wants the complexity. It's functional chaos.

Psychological Architecture, Not Just Technical

Here's where it gets interesting for anyone building digital products: the redirect isn't just a technical event. It's a psychological one.

When a platform controls your path — even invisibly — it controls your context. Where you land matters less than how you arrive. Amazon's recommendation engine doesn't just show you products; it shows you products filtered through the lens of what you were already looking at. That's not an accident. Every step of your journey has been pre-shaped by the step before it.

Google's "People Also Ask" boxes and featured snippets are essentially redirects in disguise. Instead of sending you to a third-party site, Google answers your question right there on the results page. You got what you needed without ever leaving. Mission accomplished — for Google, anyway. For the publisher who wrote that answer? Not so much.

Meta's entire feed algorithm is a redirect system at scale. Every scroll, every pause, every tap is a micro-decision the platform is making on your behalf — routing your attention toward content that maximizes engagement rather than content you explicitly asked for. You think you're browsing freely. You're actually being steered.

What Smaller Sites Can Actually Use

Okay, so the big platforms have billions of dollars and armies of engineers. What's the takeaway for someone running a SaaS product, an e-commerce store, or a content site?

A lot, actually.

Intentional flow beats accidental flow every time. Most small sites let users wander. They drop someone on a homepage and hope for the best. The big platforms never do this. Every entry point is mapped. Every exit is anticipated. If you're not thinking about where a user should go next at every stage of their visit, you're leaving conversions on the table.

URL structure is a UX decision, not just a technical one. Clean, readable URLs build trust. Messy ones erode it. But beyond aesthetics, your URL structure should reflect your site's information hierarchy. Users — and search engines — navigate your site partly by reading your URLs. Make them meaningful.

Internal linking is your redirect system. You don't need a complex technical infrastructure to engineer user journeys. Strategic internal linking does the same job at a fraction of the cost. If someone reads a blog post about email marketing, what do you want them to read next? Link to it. Explicitly. Don't assume they'll find it.

Track your click paths, not just your conversions. Most small site owners obsess over conversion rates but never look at the paths users take to get there. Tools like Google Analytics 4, Hotjar, or Microsoft Clarity let you see the actual journeys people are taking through your site. Look at them. You'll almost certainly find users getting stuck or wandering in ways you didn't expect.

Be careful with external redirects. If you're sending users off-site — to a partner, an affiliate link, a social profile — think about whether you're getting anything back. Big platforms never send traffic somewhere without a tracking mechanism or a reason. Neither should you.

The Ethical Edge

It's worth pausing here to acknowledge that not all of this is benign. Some of what the big platforms do with redirects and invisible routing crosses into manipulation. Forcing users into in-app browsers, burying external links, or throttling clicks to competitors — these tactics prioritize platform control over user autonomy.

For smaller sites, there's actually a competitive advantage in being more transparent. Users are increasingly aware that they're being steered online. A site that respects their journey — that tells them where a link goes, that doesn't trap them in weird redirect loops, that loads fast and goes where it says it will — earns a different kind of trust than the giants can offer.

The invisible redirect is a powerful tool. Like most powerful tools, it can build something great or do real damage depending on how it's used.

The Bottom Line

The web's biggest platforms didn't get to their scale by letting users wander freely. They built invisible systems — technical, algorithmic, and psychological — that quietly shape every journey users take through their products. Understanding those systems is the first step to building something smarter.

You don't need Amazon's budget to be intentional about user flow. You just need to stop treating navigation as an afterthought and start treating it as one of the most important design decisions you make.
