Adventure Racing

Concept:

Co-ed teams of four (traditional racing team configuration) start off on a race course where the route is not known. All they know is that they have to make it to a series of checkpoints in the most efficient manner possible. Using map and compass, racers determine the best way to get to a checkpoint.

A combination of
Orienteering, trail-running, mountain biking, often paddling and climbing, an expedition event can span over 8 days.

Racing factors:

  • Team dynamics - Probably the biggest uncertainty is how a team will interact when every member is pushed to the breaking point. It's here that racers learn not only about their teammates, but about themselves.
  • Support - BYOS, bring your own support. These races are trials in self-sufficency. Racers figure out food, water, and how they will manage these resources.
  • Weather - Rain, snow, wind, heat are all elements that racers will experience.
