CiteSeerCiteSeer, also known as ResearchIndex, is a search engine written by researchers at the NEC Research Institute. It carries out autonomous citation indexing of scientific papers and preprints available on the World Wide Web about Computer and Information Science.
It is aimed at improving the dissemination and feedback of scientific literature. Being a non-profit service that can freely be used by anybody, it is a typical manifestation of the Open Access movement that currently revolutionizes scientific publishing.
The name is at least partially wordplay. A 'seer' is a prophet of sorts, in this case about citations to publications, and a one who sight sees is a 'sightseer'.
