In telecommunications, the term gateway has the following meanings:

A gateway may contain devices such as protocol translators, impedance matching devices, rate converters, fault isolators, or signal translators as necessary to provide system interoperability. It also requires that mutually acceptable administrative procedures be established between the two networks.
  • A protocol translation/mapping gateway interconnects networks with different network protocol technologies by performing the required protocol conversions.
    • Loosely, a computer configured to perform the tasks of a gateway.

    A special case of gateway is the router.


    Gateway is a phrase used by webmasters and search engine optimizers to describe a webpage designed to attract visitors and search engines to a particular website. A typical gateway page is small, simple and highly optimized. It's primary goal is to attract visitors searching for relevant key words or phrases, and provide hyperlinks to pages within the website.
    Gateway is also a name of a 1976 novel (First book of Heechee-series, winner of the Hugo award and Nebula award) by Frederik Pohl.
    The Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex (more commonly known as Gateway) is a stadium complex in Cleveland, Ohio, containing Jacobs Field and Gund Arena.
